It wasn’t pretty, but Nayeli Garcia pitched a complete game in her first start in the circle, and the Rio Hondo Lady Bobcats escaped with an 11-7 win over Brownsville Lopez on Tuesday night.

“ We got off to a quick start, we were able to drive the pitch count up and be selective at the plate,” Rio Hondo coach Brett Esparza said. “Getting ahead was great, and to be in a pressure situation this early, you know, the wheels didn’t fall off, and our pitcher got the last strikeout and closed it out.”

Garcia cruised until a Lopez rally — including a dropped pop-up on the infield — led to a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Garcia escaped with her seventh of nine strikeouts on the night.

“ I’m not going to lie, this is my first game pitching,” Garcia. “Getting that moment, it felt great. Coach gave me the opportunity to start the game, and I took advantage of it.”

Rio Hondo jumped ahead 2-0 in the second, with second baseman Dominque DeJesus and first baseman Alyssa Silguero stringing together singles and a double off the bat of center fielder Savannah Gonzalez.

Lopez starter Alex Castro lost her command in the fourth, allowing Rio Hondo to break the game open with a bases-clearing double by Kayla Castaneda to go ahead 5-0.

A bases-loaded single by DeJesus scored three runs in top of the seventh, extending the lead to 9-0.
