Brownsville-born author Rudy Ruiz won two awards last month during the 2014 International Latino Book Awards held at the American Library Association Convention in Las Vegas.

Ruiz’s book, “7 for the Revolution,” won Best Popular Fiction-English and The Mariposa Award for Best First Book in Fiction, which he tied first place with Maria Nieto’s book “Pig Behind the Bear.”

“I’m very excited to find out that the book won two first place awards,” Ruiz said. “As a writer, you welcome all the encouragement you can get. And I think, most importantly for me, it just brings more attention to the book, which given everything that’s going on right now in immigration related news—I know is a big development in the (Rio Grande) Valley.

I think anything that brings more attention and humanizes the situation is helpful. So that for me is the most exciting part, to contribute to the conversation and hopefully continue to kind of put pressure on policy makers to come up with some solutions for immigration reform,” he said.

Ruiz said aspiring writers should write about “what you know” and don’t give up because it’s a long process. Digging into ones roots, personal and family experiences can not only be helpful, but inspiring as well.

“That’s kind of what I’ve found has inspired me and has worked for me,” he said.

Ruiz’s family and culture have been a focal point to his inspirations to write. Most of his stories have come from either a story he has heard or something he saw in his community.

“That gets me thinking, and in order to kind of build an engaging story around it, I fictionalize it and I add to it. But I always find myself going back to my roots for more inspiration. Whether it’s my Latino roots, whether it’s my family or it’s growing up along the border, I always find myself going back to those sources for inspiration,” Ruiz said.
