During each of the past two seasons, the Jubilee Brownsville Lady Titans saw their season end in the semifinals of the Texas Charter School Academic & Athletic League state basketball tournament.

They returned to the tournament once again and proved that the third time really is a charm.

The Lady Titans defeated Keller International Leadership of Texas High School 43-27 in the tournament final and were crowned TCSAAL state champions Saturday at the Corbin Robertson Center in Georgetown.

The Lady Titans also defeated IL Texas Katy 54-30 in the state semifinals earlier in the day.

“ It feels good, and the girls fought all day long,” Jubilee coach Victor Venegas said. “It was two hard-fought games. Even though we had the lead, both teams kept coming at us. We battled all the way to the end, and the resiliency of our team paid off. What helped us a lot is that we’ve been here before, so our aggressiveness always was there. It’s an awesome feeling to say we’re the first team from Brownsville to bring home a state title in basketball.”

Jubilee was forced to play the final game without senior starting center Jacqueline Cavazos, who sat out the final due to a wrist injury sustained in the semifinals.

That did not matter as the Lady Titans got off to a hot start and built a 25-8 halftime lead, led by eighth-grader Mariana Espinosa and sophomore Julissa Garza, who finished with 17 and 11 points, respectively.

“ We had to play with a backup player, but our girls stepped it up,” Venegas said. “We have the next girl mentality. It all went good. We took a 14-5 lead to force a timeout, and we came back out and built up that lead and never lost it. I really think playing ahead the whole time was beneficial to our girls.

Garza and Espinosa not only had a big games in the finals, but they also were the leading scorers in the semis against IL Katy, scoring 19 and 15 points.

In addition to the state title, Jubilee finishes the season with a 22-9 overall record and a third consecutive undefeated distinct championship.
