With Spring Break parties upon us, it’s important to know the dangers of mixing alcohol and prescription medications. Mixing alcohol and stimulants, such as Adderall and Ritalin, dampen the effects and could lead to increased consumption of either substance to seek their effects and consequently lead to overdose. Furthermore, the mixture decreases clear decision making and control of behavior and mood.

Mixing alcohol and depressants, such as Valium and Xanax, highly increases the chances of overdosing due to the amount of suppressants stimulating the central nervous system. The Global Information Network About Drugs states that approximately 3,000 deaths occur every year due to overdose of the alcohol-depressant mixture; 58 percent of the overdoses are accidental.

In South Texas, 15.9 percent of teenage students reported misusing a prescription medication, and 24.2 percent

of students reported alcohol was present at parties. As for Texas College students, 22 percent of students reported misusing a prescription medication, Adderall being the most misused.

To be part of safe Spring Break efforts, engage in the following: 1) Safeguard medications from everyone! You never know who might browse through your medicine cabinet.

2) Don’t share your medications. Doctors prescribe medications curated to fit each individual’s needs.

3) Educate others about the consequences of mixing substances. Promote healthy behaviors among your family and peers to keep Spring Break safe.

The Prevention Resource Center, a program of Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas, serves as the central data collection repository for South Texas. To find out more about PRC visit www.prc11.org or call at 956-787-7111.
