A mother-daughter duo are accused of stealing from the Rio Grande City school district by falsifying records.

Leslie Bazan, 38, and her daughter Ashley Bazan, 21, turned themselves in to investigators from the Starr County Special Crimes Unit on Tuesday, according to Brenda Lee, the law enforcement liaison for the Starr County Attorney's Office.

A secretary at Academy for Academic Enhancement Middle School, Leslie Bazan is alleged to have falsified records to reflect that her daughter had worked more days as a substitute than she actually did.

The elder Bazan was charged with 14 counts of tampering with a governmental record, a third-degree felony. Ashley Bazan was charged with one count of theft of property ($750 or less than $2,500), a class A misdemeanor.

Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Eloy Zarate Jr. issued a $1,500 personal recognizance bond for Ashley Bazan and a $5,000 cash surety bond on each count, for a total of $70,000, for Leslie Bazan, according to Major Carlos Delgado of the Starr County Sheriff’s Office.

Both were released Tuesday, and the investigation remains ongoing.
