Donna Superintendent Jesus Rene Reyna faced charges of bribery and obstruction Thursday morning, after police said he and a school board member paid the school police chief to drop a probe into theft and insurance fraud.

Donna ISD Police Chief Roy Padilla arrested Reyna outside his office in Donna about 9 a.m. and drove him to Hidalgo County Justice of the Peace Bobby Contreras' courtroom in Pharr, where he was arraigned.

Contreras formally charged Reyna with one count of obstruction or retaliation, a third-degree felony, and one count of bribery, a second-degree felony. Bond was set at $25,000.

Reyna and school board member Ernesto Lugo is accused of paying $496.23 for unpaid millage to Padilla in April in exchange for the district police department to drop an investigation against Reyna and his family for theft and insurance fraud against the district, a complaint states.

Padilla also said two of his officers were facing termination as a result of the investigation but maintained their positions in exchange for Padilla stopping any further legal action against Reyna, the complaint states.

If convicted of obstruction, he could face up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
