PALMVIEW — The passenger of a car that crashed into a patrol unit Thursday before police opened fire has been released from custody, but the driver who allegedly pointed a gun at officers remains in critical condition.

The Texas Rangers continue investigating the officer-involved shooting that took place about 2 p.m. in the 700 block of Goodwin Acres Road, where the driver of a white Lincoln car crashed into a Palmview Police Department patrol unit after a pursuit that began in McAllen, according to investigators.

The officers opened fire on the vehicle after the driver, who has not been identified, pointed a gun at them, according to police. Both the passenger and the driver were rushed to local hospitals, but the passenger — identified as a 17-year-old man from Pharr — was released Thursday night.

He was later released from custody to family members, according to Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Lt. Johnny Hernandez. The driver was transported to BrooksArmyMedicalCenter and remained in critical condition Friday morning, Hernandez said.
