After 31 seasons as a player and coach at the University of Texas-Pan

American, Reggie Tredaway is calling it quits.

The 55-year-old Tredaway resigned Wednesday after five seasons as the Broncs

head coach, in which time he went 106-152-1.

I just felt like it was the right time for me, Tredaway said. Ive been

thinking about it for a couple of years and I said that if we werent making

progress, it was time for a change and I think this will help both parties, me

and the university.

The last two seasons have been tough for Tredaway. Following consecutive

30-win seasons in 1999-200, his second and third seasons after replacing Al

Ogletree, the Broncs went 12-40 in 2001, setting a team record for losses.

After encountering eligibility problems with junior college transfers last

season, the Broncs went with a younger lineup this year and the inexperience

showed as UTPA finished 15-38.

Tredaway made his resignation effective June 30. With a masters degree in

kinesiology, he also teaches three classes. He said he didnt know if he would

stay on as a lecturer, but did say that his workload was one of the reasons he

retired.

Im tired of the bureaucracy as a whole, he said. With the NCAA and the

paper trails you have to leave, you dont have time to coach and with

everything involved, I didnt see it getting any better. With teaching,

coaching and recruiting, I was spreading myself pretty thin time-wise.

Tredaway was also facing the potential of having his roster cut from the

current 37 players to 28 to bring UTPA into compliance with Title IX

regulations, although the number of scholarships would remain at 11.7.

When you weigh everything, the progress that weve made, Title IX, I think

its the right time, he said.

Tredaway said he felt the Broncs would show improvement over the next few

years.

I think two years from now, when these kids are juniors, theyll be very

competitive, he said.

Tredaway said he might stay involved in baseball as a scout and that he has

had offers from major league organizations. He is also involved in the cattle

business.

Tredaway played third base for then-Pan American University from 1969-71,

including the Broncs 1971 College World Series appearance. He returned in

1974 and served as Ogletrees assistant until 1997, when Ogletree retired.

Reggie is one of the finest people Ive ever had the opportunity to work

with, UTPA athletics director Bill Weidner said. Im proud of

the way hes represented Pan-American through the years, starting from when he

was one of the best student-athletes weve ever had, through to being an

integral part of Al Ogletrees success, to the solid leadership hes provided

as head coach.

With recruiting in progress, Weidner said the university will conduct a search

for Tredaways replacement and fill it with the most qualified candidate.

There are two openings Tredaways and the first assistant position vacated

when Mike Brown resigned in January.

Weidner said he will meet with pitching coach John Johnson about his future

with the Broncs.
