Kids from all over town are learning to play golf and polishing their skills this summer courtesy of the Brownville Independent School District.

BISD is offering free golf lessons to all BISD students from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the Brownsville Golf Center, 1800 San Marcello Blvd.

The golf center is an 18-hole regulation golf course owned by the City of Brownsville. BISD’s recreational golf program is offered Monday through Thursday during June, so there’s still time to take advantage of the free instruction, said Ray Ramirez, the golf coach at Lopez Early College High School, who helps run the program.

Ramirez said the golf coaches from BISD’s five other comprehensive high schools are helping teach skills. Instruction for golfers 5 to 11 is from 7:30 to 9:30 each morning, with older players receiving instruction after that until 11. Then each coach takes a group of golfers out to play the seventh and one or two nearby holes, Ramirez said.

The late-morning session is considered a camp, where golfers get skill instruction in everything from chipping onto the green to putting and driving the ball down the fairway.

Wednesday morning one of the practice greens was set up with two cups with pins. A tin can was perched in between. Players stood on the green’s edge and took turns chipping toward one of the pins or trying to knock over the can.

Fabiola Niño, a senior next year at Veterans Memorial Early College High School, has been on the golf team since freshman year. She said coaches at the camp were emphasizing the short game.

“I really love it,” she said referring to golf. “It teaches you discipline and it helps you focus.” She said this was her second year to attend camp.

Mark Perez, also a member of the golf team at Veterans, said the summer camp has helped his game.

“It helps you grow as a player,” he said. “A lot of people overlook this sport thinking that it’s such an easy sport, when in reality it’s a very difficult sport when you take into account green speed and the difficulty of the course you’re playing.”

He also said it takes more than just casual interest to get good at golf.

“You have to give it 110 %. One or two times a week won’t do it,” he said. “It isn’t a sport you can master in a couple of weeks. Tiger Woods didn’t become Tiger Woods overnight.”

Last year the Veterans Memorial girls finished first at district while the boys’ team placed second, Niño said. Perez added that his course of choice is Riverview Golf Course, conveniently located across Military Highway from Veterans Memorial.

On the other side of the green, Natali Ramirez, a rising sophomore at Lopez and the coach’s daughter, practiced chipping with a pitching wedge. She was a regional qualifier last year and is looking to improve.

“I’ve been playing since forever,” she said. “I’ve made a lot of new friends. It’s a lot of fun.”
