The Brownsville Herald

Three weeks after a house on 603 E. Washington was demolished, piles of debris

remain on the property a few blocks from the historic downtown Brownsville

area.

Residents said the heap of garbage is an eyesore, but fear there is nothing

they can do about it. Some say they arent sure if it is the citys mess to

clean up, or the owners.

It looks pretty bad, but what can we do, said Maria Garcia, a resident of E.

Adams Street who lives just half a block from the property. We would like to

see it cleaned up as soon as possible. Its been there like that for a while.

Raul Lopez, who lives on E. 6th Street, said he doesnt know who owns the

property, but warns the garbage cant stay there forever.

Its a health hazard because rodents, rats, and other animals could breed

there, Lopez said. We need the city to do something about it. If they cant

find the owner, the city should clean it up.

Joe Hinojosa, the citys environmental coordinator, said the responsibility to

clean the property is solely the owners.

Hinojosa said owners have a certain period of time to clean up after there is

a demolition on their property. Hinojosa said his department would get

involved in the case when it creates a health or safety issue.

We get involved to issue a notice, Hinojosa said. I think its been a

couple of weeks since it was demolished. If we get a neighbors complaint, we

also get involved.

Daniel Anzak, a permit facilitator in the citys permitting department, said

property owners have 30 days to clean up when a property is demolished. Anzak

identified the owner as Mike Belleville.

He said the property was demolished three weeks ago and that the owner

promised to clean up.

It will be cleaned up either Monday or Tuesday, Anzak said.

The person who demolished the property was supposed to clean up, Anzak said.

But he left after demolishing it three weeks ago.
