Laura Farris, the newest forecaster at the National Weather Service office in Brownsville, is having a great time living out her dream job.

“ It was in sixth grade. I did a research project on tornadoes and that’s when I decided to become a meteorologist” she said this past week. “I loved math and science. For meteorology you have to do lots of math and science, so it just sort of added up.”

Farris started work Oct. 1 after graduating from Texas A&M University in College station with a bachelor’s in meteorology and master’s of ocean science and technology.

“ Most of the meteorologists here worked in private-sector jobs to get here. I’m fortunate to get here right out of college,” she said.

Meteorologists at the NWS fill different roles at different desks, Farris said. For the present she is a meteorologist in training, having received training in the various weather balloons NWS sends up and with the forecasting software NWS uses to report the weather.

“ I have to go through a lot of training before they make me an official NWS forecaster. They offer the best training,” she said.

“ It’s exciting when there are big events (like Hurricane Michael), but also just learning more about the weather,” she added.

Farris grew up in Katy, hear Houston. In the three weeks she’s been here she’s found the Rio Grande Valley to be a friendly place.

“ So far it’s been very warm and welcoming -- the people in my apartment complex, my co-workers, the people at church. I’ve felt very welcomed,” she said.

As far as the NWS, “our office is always working on a lot of things,” she said. “The NWS exists to inform the public and keep them safe. What we’re working on within the office is to communicate successfully within the culture. It’s really fun. I love it.”
