Nearly 400 more people have cast early votes in the Brownsville municipal runoff election as of Wednesday than during early voting in the general election.

On the third day of early voting in the runoff for mayor and two City Commission seats 984 people cast votes, bringing the total early vote to 3,311 compared to 2,915 during the first three days of early voting in the general election.

The mayoral race is between former city manager Charlie Cabler and Texas Southmost College Trustee Trey Mendez, candidates who edged out incumbent Mayor Tony Martinez, who was first elected in 2011.

During the general election, Mendez received 1,435 more votes than Cabler.

The City Commission runoff includes the District 1 and At-Large A seats.

The At-Large A seat opened up after former Commissioner Cesar De Leon resigned. This matchup is between John Cowen and Jessica Puente Bradshaw.

Cowen nearly won the general election outright, falling short by less than one percentage point, receiving 2,331 more votes than Bradshaw.

The District 1 runoff features the longest tenured member of the City Commission who is facing a challenge by political newcomer to municipal politics.

Incumbent Ricardo Longoria is facing a challenge from Nurith Galonsky, who received 98 more votes than Longoria during the general election.

To have won the general election outright, victorious candidates needed 50% of the vote plus one vote.

Early voting ends June 18 and the runoff election is June 22.
