Los Fresnos employees long outgrew the cramped City Hall on Brazil Street, and officials on Monday will celebrate the start of construction on a new facility with a groundbreaking ceremony.

The $3.2 million building at 520 E. Ocean Blvd., near the Los Fresnos Rodeo Grounds, is expected to be completed by the end of August 2019, City Manager Mark Milum said.

Employees will move from the 4,500-square-foot building to a nearly 11,000-square-foot facility that Milum said has been designed with future growth in mind. There will be three vacant offices and a file storage room that can be converted to offices.

“Thirty years from now it will still be a good building for the city, and we won’t have to move again,” he said.

The Police Department will stay at the Brazil Street building and expand into the offices vacated by administrative staff. The Los Fresnos Chamber of Commerce also will have office space at the new building, and Milum it will also be able to accommodate about 100 people during City Council meetings rather than the current 15-20 who can be seated in the meeting room now.
