Cynthia “Cyndi” Hinojosa announced her candidacy for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2, Place 1 Tuesday night outside of The Dancy Building.

Hinojosa, who plans to run as a Democrat, will face off with incumbent Linda Salazar, who has held the post since 2005, in the March 2020 Democratic Primary.

Hinojosa said in a press release that if elected, she pledges to provide the community with a Justice of the Peace Court that places the needs of people first, “with fairness, efficiency and a commitment to give everyone an opportunity to be heard.”

She said she holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas-Pan American, a Master of Education in Counseling & Guidance from the University of Texas-Pan American and is a licensed professional counselor in Texas.

In the press release, Hinojosa said she has always been interested in public office but waited until her children were older before taking the plunge.

She worked for five years as a parole officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, as well as working as a clinician and assistant program director at La Esperanza Home for Boys for seven years while also working in private practice as a counselor and working as office manager at the Law Office of Gilberto Hinojosa & Associates.

Hinojosa said she has been active in community service, including being a Proyecto Juan Diego board member, a Community Development Corporation of Brownsville board member, the recording secretary of the Catholic Daughters-Sacred Heart of Mary Court, 2448, a past board member of the Recovery Center of Cameron County, past president of Cameron County Texas Democratic Woman, a Cameron County Party National Delegate in 2016 and is currently Cameron County Precinct Chair for Precinct 9.

She has been married to Gilberto Hinojosa for two decades and has five children.
