The Brownsville Police Department will have a new chief starting Monday.

City Manager Noel Bernal announced Friday that he’s chosen Felix Sauceda as chief to replace Orlando Rodriguez, who retired from the position in August 2018.

“I am pleased to name Felix Sauceda as our new police chief,” Bernal said in a news release. “This decision was based on his leadership and vision, as Brownsville continues to grow, our commitment to building strong relationships with our citizens by instilling a servant leadership culture, and transforming the department for success in the 21 t century.”

Sauceda joined the Brownsville Police Department in 1991 as a patrol officer—the starting position for all officers in the department.

Since then, he served as a traffic investigator and motorcycle officer.

In 2008, he was promoted to patrol sergeant and later promoted again to patrol lieutenant before becoming a commander on October 19, 2018.

Sauceda earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at Brownsville and a Master’s Degree in Police Administration from the University of Texas Pan-American.

He is also a graduate of the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas Leadership Command College, a certified Master Peace Officer and holds certifications, including the National Incident Management Systems and Instructor-Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer on Standards and Education.

Bernal said interview panels assisted him in choosing Sauceda.

“I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the interview panels for their participation in this process,” Bernal said.
