Dads and cars go together like rings and pistons, which is how the Brownsville Historical Association got the idea for its Father’s Day weekend car show, taking place Saturday at the Historic Brownsville Museum parking lot at 6th and East Adams Street.

The free family event, in its fourth year, goes from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature oldies music, hot dogs and soft drinks, tire kicking, serious discussions of displacement and gear ratios, and chrome. Lots of chrome.

Showcased will be classic, antique and custom cars and trucks from the Brownsville Classics club and the Antique Automobile Club of America-Rio Grande Valley Chapter in Harlingen.

Also on display will be the Brownsville Fire Department’s recently reacquired 1926 American LaFrance Type 31 tillered ladder truck, which debuted last month at Vintage Days in Market Square.

Ricky Garza, BHA’s head of programming and events, said the event grows a bit each year and that he expects a good turnout Saturday.

“Based on our social media outreach we’re looking at several hundred people showing up for the event,” he said. “This is more than likely going to be one of the largest car shows we’ve had.”

Garza said there will probably be about 40 vehicles on display.

“We haven’t had the Harlingen cars before,” he said. “We’re looking forward to having some of those.”

Garza described it as a casual affair for families to enjoy. In another first, the museum will be open free of charge admission during the show, he said.

“This is something we’re going to try out,” Garza said. “People will also be able to walk through a museum on the history of Brownsville.”

Naturally, the club members enjoy any opportunity to show off their machines, Garza said.

“It’s great for the people who have the cars themselves,” he said. “They get to show off the work they’ve done to the vehicles that they love. They really have such pride in their cars.”
