The Brownsville Metro now offers an app that allows riders to see where the bus is and in how many minutes until will it arrive at the stop of their preference.

The Ride Systems app, which is free and available for both Android and iOS, started as an effort to help riders manage their time better and not be outside in the sun waiting for the bus without knowing when will it get there.

“I remember taking the bus all the time when I was a young kid. I was raised by a single mom so we did not have a car until I was 15,”Brownsville City Commissioner Ben Neece said. “One of my earliest feelings of compassion that I remember as a young kid was watching the housekeepers who would go running trying to catch the bus and how all of a sudden they would stop because the bus got there and took off before they could get there after a hard day of work.”

Robert J. Garza, assistant director at Brownsville Metro, said the process to launch the app took months of data and installing the GPS devices on every one of the fixed-route buses.

Brownsville Metro did a bus-stop inventory throughout the city to input the data for the app. Currently, there are 590 bus stops in the city.

“For nearly 40 years, the residents of Brownsville and visitors of our beautiful city have relied on Brownsville Metro to provide safe and reliable transportation for work, recreation, traveling and more,” Garza said. “From the touch of their phones, our Brownsville Metro riders will be able to monitor the bus routes.”

According to Garza, there are 1.6 million riders every year.

Neece said public transportation is vital to Brownsville’s community because not everyone can afford a car and they rely on the bus to go to job interviews, doctor appointments, school, work and shopping.

“A significant portion of our population relies on the timely and safe transportation that is provided by Brownsville Metro,” he said. “Now there is an app so that they never miss a bus and are able to meet where they need to, when they need to.”

Jesus Roberto Rodriguez, Texas Southmost College president, said more than 4,000 TSC students relied on Brownsville Metro to go to class in the past three months.

TSC and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley students ride for free with valid student ID.
