The Brownsville Independent School District and former Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas issued a joint statement early Wednesday formalizing her resignation as Superintendent of Schools and departure from the district.

The two parties issued the statement at the conclusion of a Board of Trustees meeting that lasted into the early morning hours. It stated that the board and Zendejas had reached an agreement that allows Zendejas to pursue other interests and permits the board to pursue hiring another superintendent.

As of press time Wednesday attorneys for Zendejas and the board were still finalizing the separation agreement.

"The board and Dr. Zendejas have entered into the agreement believing it is in their respective best interests and in the best interests of the district," the statement said.

"On behalf of the entire district, the Board of Trustees expresses its sincere appreciation to Dr. Zendejas for her efforts while serving as superintendent of this great school district and its wonderful students, parents and administrators, and for the many achievements and accomplishments of the entire district during Dr. Zendejas' tenure as superintendent," the statement reads.

Zendejas thanked the present and past Board of Trustees for providing her the opportunity to serve as superintendent.

"A school district is measured by the commitment of the board, staff and community to its children and their achievement," the statement reads. "This district is indeed so committed. Dr. Zendejas would like to express her heartfelt appreciation to the staff and community for their support of the district's programs and services during her term as superintendent."

The board and Zendejas also acknowledged the district's teachers, principals, administrators, staff, students, parents and patrons, "who have all contributed to the district's success."

Zendejas was hired as superintendent in June 2015. In October she received a two-year contract extension that raised her salary to $305,000 annually. During Tuesday night's meeting the board voided the contract extension and raise by a 6-0-1 vote.

At a Jan. 11 meeting the board placed Zendejas on administrative leave with pay. The board later hired Sylvia Ann Reyna Hatton of McAllen as interim superintendent.

Hatton earned her doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Texas at Austin in 1998, owns her own education consultancy and is the former executive director of the Region One Education Service Center in Edinburg.

In the statement the board expressed its best wishes to Zendejas and said it would soon begin its search for a new superintendent.
