Students get chance to play scientists

Valley Morning Star

HARLINGEN Its not everyday that students get the chance to play scientists

and engineers and design a habitat on the planet Mars.

But this is what fourth- and fifth-grade students at Treasures Hills

Elementary School did Tuesday as they participated in Mars CityAlpha project,

which is part of a NASA science curriculum for the Challenger Center for Space

Science Education.

Some 20 students under the Gifted and Talented program at the school

participated in a Power Point presentation involving the curriculum at the

districts Instructional Technology Center.

Gregory Manis, 10, a fifth grade student, was one of the participants. He

added cartoon graphics in his Power Point presentation taken from clip art,

including an image of Elvis Presley dancing and the words, Coming Soon, to

the red planet, above his head in flashing lights.

I like to be a little funny by using cartoon graphics, Manis said.

The project involved initial design phases needed to establish a human habitat

on Mars. It is based on the conclusions and imaginations of scientists and

engineers of today, who are in the planning stages of creating a Mars habitat.

Students are certainly being challenged by this opportunity, said Suzi

Kiphen, GT teacher at the Treasure Hills, who directed the project on Tuesday.

They already know about our solar system; now, they understand how to present

the information in a new way, said Kiphen.

The project was not a grading assignment, but a practical experience for

students to explore integrated technology with space science, she said.
