Valley Morning Star

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND After three years of service as the Economic Development

Corp. administrator today is Linda Whitbys last day on the job.

Yet, the long-time Island resident and former owner of Island Vending is not

leaving the sandy shores of South Padre Island. Shes going back into private

business with the opening of a new art gallery slated for February.

The entrepreneurial bug hit me again, she said. Its been three years since

I was in business for myself and I just wanted to do it again.

Whitby said her gallery, Art Local & Beyond at 410 Padre Blvd., will be a

chance to tap into the artistic talents that live and work in the Laguna Madre

area and will feature a range of prices suitable for both tourists and serious

I have meet several artists in recent years, and I wanted to help expand the

awareness and exposure of the people in the Valley and up the coast to our

local artists, Whitby said.

It will be slightly different from the prior art gallery. We will have

original art in a wide range of prices from affordable to five figures but I

will also accommodate the tourists by having small, original artwork that are

inexpensive and easy to travel with.

With a lot of work before the Feb. 1 opening, Whitby, who plans on being a

one-woman operation, is counting on her artistic friends for advice and a

little help now and then.

I have been so busy here I havent had much of an opportunity to take care of

all the details that I have to do prior to opening so January is my get ready

month, she said. I dont have plans to hire anyone right away but Im very

fortunate to have friends who are artists who have offered to assist.

Whitby said she plans to be keep and eye on the EDCs wetlands nature center

because of the work she contributed to the project and the great benefits it

could produce for the community.

I have a pet project which is the birding and wetlands center to be built

south of the Convention Centre so I will be watching to see how that

progresses, she said.
