Sunday best to cascarones mess

The Brownsville Herald

Marcie Lasseigne

I bet many of you took your time getting ready this morning and look good

today.

Easter Sunday is the one day out of the year when you know exactly what you

are going to wear when you wake up in the morning.

You probably laid out your clothes last night and there is not a wrinkle in

sight on your dress or your pants are pressed and will hang just right.

Most people like to look nice for this holiday.

It is the perfect occasion to go out and buy new clothes for spring.

When we were younger, we depended on our parents to help us.

One year, my mother came down with the flu and was not able to partake in our

shopping adventure.

My sister and I looked at our other option for assistance our father.

He took us to the store and proceeded to pick up every blue dress he could get

his hands on.

Lets just say my sister and I had no choice it was a blue Easter.

Thank goodness they didnt make blue shoes that year or we would have been

baby blue from head to toe.

My dad was beaming when he looked at us that Easter morning, and my mother

also smiled at the outcome because she was not wearing blue and had fully

recuperated from the flu.

We were off to Sunday service.

It is the one Sunday when you sit a little taller in your church pew and open

your ears a little wider so you can listen to every word the preacher says.

Looking down the aisle at your parents, you make sure they take notice of your

good behavior.

If you make one major slip, the deal was sealed ... there would be no great

Easter festivities in the near future, especially the egg hunt and cascarones

time.

It always amazed me that I could break an egg on someones head and not get

into trouble.

And, to top that, the person who instigated the cascarones process was my

mother.

She would break out the food coloring and the colored papers and we were ready

to decorate.

But, we were missing one important thing the eggs.

The one thing I did not look forward to the several weeks before the Easter

holidays was the quantity of eggs I knew I would be eating.

Forget cereal for breakfast, I ate eggs for like three weeks straight.

And, making the eggs was not a quick meal because you had to spend at least 10

minutes blowing the egg yolk out the shell without losing the shape of the egg

or cracking it before you could cook them.

But, it was worth every minute when it came down to that Easter Sunday and you

could smash an egg filled with confetti on anyones head in sight.

Your Sunday dress didnt matter anymore.

You were ready to have fun and your Sunday best always resulted in a

cascarones mess.
