Jury: Mother accused of drowning her children competent to stand trial

HOUSTON A jury made up almost entirely of women found a Houston mother

accused of drowning her five children competent to stand trial on capital

murder charges Saturday.

The 11-woman, one-man jury deliberated for more than eight hours over two days

before deciding Andrea Pia Yates meets the legal definition of competence by

understanding the charges against her and having the ability to consult with

her attorneys.

Yates, 37, is charged with two counts of capital murder in the deaths of three

of her five children. She has pleaded innocent by reason of insanity.
