Fresh produce, local desserts, yoga classes and more will be available this weekend at the Farmer’s Market by the Brownsville Wellness Coalition which will reopen its doors to the community from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday at Linear Park for the first time after being closed for more than six months since the pandemic first hit the Rio Grande Valley.
“We’ve been working closely with the city health officials to make sure that it is safe enough to open,” Thania Ugalde Parra with the BWC said. “The Brownsville farmer’s market is an essential food resource for our community and I speak on behalf of all the vendors when I say that we are grateful and excited to once again have the opportunity to serve our neighbors.”
The following measures will be taken to keep the community safe at the Farmer’s Market:
>> You must wear your mask at all times.
>> Practice social distancing.
>> Sanitize regularly. Hand gel stations will be available throughout the market.
>> The market will have an entrance and an exit.
>> Credit card machine will not be available.
The Market’s purpose is to provide fresh produce in a food desert location, enhance the social aspect of building community, ensure access to local seasonal products in a low-income area of the city and encourage entrepreneurship.
Some of the things that can usually be found at the pet-friendly market are: vegetables, fruits, herbs, farm fresh eggs, goat cheese, salsa and jalapeño dip, cilantro sauce, olive oil tamales, garlic hummus, breads and other baked goods, flower arrangements, kombucha, honey, artisan teas, organic smoothies, fresh juices, plants and trees, chocolate, tree nut butters, shrimp and other seafood, granola, jams and jellies, pet treats and coffee.
To motivate healthy habits, the Farmer’s Market will also offer open air yoga at 9 a.m. For everyone’s safety, there will be a limit to 10 participants on a first-come first-serve basis.
Ugalde Parra said it is important to stay active and make healthy choices. She said yoga is a combination of physical exercise, meditation, and breathing techniques that helps strengthen muscles and relieve stress.
“This allows us to have enough space to practice safely. Spaces will be assigned, face coverings are required at all times, and hand sanitizer will be provided,” Ugalde Parra said.
