I sent this letter to some of our U.S. representatives: Subject: $2.2 trillion … rescue bill passed the week of March 23, 2020 — I am outraged!
This package contained too many unrelated items which will not directly help the unemployed. Relief aid was held up one week by Rep Nancy Pelosi due to special wants not relative to unemployment. So this could have passed one week earlier, thereby helping all who are affected and in immediate need.
As an example, $25 million is a handout to the JFK Center for the Performing Arts; some of it will be used for deep cleaning and maintenance. How can this be part of a rescue bill? And then $75 million for the National Endowment for the Arts. For shame.
Readers, here is contact info to get you started to contact your representative(s): Please check your voting card if you are unsure of your district. But bear in mind Rep. Henry Cuellar — District 28 — is only accepting email from his district (what does that tell you?). Snail mail to 615 E. Houston St. #563, San Antonio, TX 78205.
Filemon Vela — District 34 — https://vela.house.gov/contact.
I am opposed to any more spending unless it is directly aimed at people or businesses who are directly impacted. I beg of you, please, no more pork! And if you can remove some of the appropriations, all the better. After the “stimulus,” most of us will need resuscitation.
