Volleyball squad begins RRAC play with OLLU

After last weekend's road trips, the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College volleyball and soccer squads are at home for some important matches.

The action starts at 6 p.m. today at Manuel Garza B. Gymnasium, where the Scorpion volleyball team (1-13) plays host to non-conference foe Our Lady of the Lake University (5-9) of San Antonio.

At 3 p.m. Saturday at the same location, the Scorpions open Red River Athletic Conference action against Huston-Tillotson University (3-11) of Austin.

The Scorpions are coming off Tuesday's 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville University.

After this weekend, the UTB-TSC volleyball team's next home date will be an Oct. 29 rematch with TAMUK.

The Scorpion men's and women's soccer teams are coming off last weekend's losses in Oklahoma to a pair of NAIA nationally ranked opponents and would like nothing better than to return to the win column on Saturday at Morningside Park against RRAC opponent Northwood University. The men play at 1 p.m. and the women at 3 p.m.

"(Our) regular season (success) will be determined in next few days," UTB-TSC women's soccer coach Nikola "Nik" Barjaktarevic said. "We face probably our two toughest (RRAC) opponents in North-wood on Saturday and Texas Wesleyan next Wednesday. Northwood finished first and Texas Wesleyan second in regular season last year and we had to play three games in three days to win the conference tournament.

"We can only focus on one game at a time, so we just have to beat Northwood at home (first)," he added. "We are still unbeaten here and I hope our fans will be a factor again Saturday."

The UTB-TSC women are 3-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the RRAC. The Scorpion men are 5-4 and 1-0.

Saturday marks the RRAC opener for Northwood's men (5-4) and women (4-3-1).

"Northwood will be a handfull," UTB-TSC men's soccer coach Daniel Balaguero said. "They will be well-organized, so we must break them down early. If not, it will be a long afternoon for us."
