JOSEPH EDGAR DIXON, JR., 83, died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at his residence in Rancho Viejo.

Arrangements pending with Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

MARIA MERCED ORIVE

Maria Merced Orive, 79, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 2, 2005, at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville.

Tata as she was affectionately called, was a life-long resident of Brownsville and a member of a well known pioneer family.

She was the beloved daughter of Antonio and Tomasita Shears Orive who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sisters, Ofelia Tamayo, Sophie Buero, and Rosario O. Gomez, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. today Monday, April 4, 2005, at Darling-Mouser Funeral Home and continue through 9 p.m. The recitation of the holy rosary will take place at 7 p.m. this evening at Darling-Mouser. The Mass of Resurrection will be on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at Immaculate Conception Cathedral with the time still pending. Please call the funeral home to obtain that information. Interment will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park. Serving as Ms. Orives pallbearers will be: Rolando Tamayo, Victor Tamayo, Jaime Gomez, Anthony (Benny) Rendon, Aaron Rendon, and Ray Shears. Honorary pallbearers will be: Steve Gomez, Stephanie and Erica Gillis, Nora A. Rendon, and Arthur Rendon.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Darling-Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Blvd. 546-7111.

RUBY MARVELLA BATES

Ruby Marvella Bates, 83, entered the kingdom of Christ early in the afternoon on April 2, 2005 at Harlingen Medical Center. She was born on March 6, 1922 in Russelville, Arkansas. Mrs. Bates was a member of the Grimes Street Church of Christ in Harlingen, Texas and also a past member of the Church of Christ on Price Rd., in Brownsville, Texas. She was also a member of the Brownsville Art League for many years, was a recognized Artist who won many awards for her artwork. Mrs. Bates was a former telephone operator for South Western Bell for many years.

She is survived by 4 children, Harold Dean Bud Bates, Beverly Gurley, Hugh S. Bates, Glenda K. Williams, 15 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. Siblings, Mary Burkhalter, Leona Reilly, Amy Maness.

And was preceded in death by, her husband Don H. Bates, son Jim Bates, parents Maude and Jim Coots, brother George Coots, and sister Mamie Goins.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 and a Graveside service at 2 p.m. at Mont-Meta Memorial Park with Rev. Andy Joiner officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae-Garza Funeral Home, 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd., San Benito, Texas.
