RGV Capsules: Scorpions hit road for first time in 2012

With 11 baseball games in the books for 2012, the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College finally gets on a bus Tuesday when the Scorpions face Texas A&M University-Kingsville in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Nolan Ryan Field.

Both games will be seven innings.

The Javelinas are 3-1 for the year, including winning two of three games against the University of Houston-Victoria last weekend. UTB-TSC and UHV split a four-game series Feb. 3 and 4 in Brownsville.

It’s the fourth meeting between the two schools. TAMUK won at home in 2008, and the teams split a home-and-home series in 2011, each winning the road game. The Scorpions won 5-0 last year in Kingsville behind the pitching of Chris Raley.

The two-hour bus ride marks the first time the Scorpions will play away from the friendly confines of Scorpion Field. UTB-TSC played its first 11 games at home and will play 14 of its first 16, 19 of its first 22, and 25 of its first 31 games at home.

The schedule almost does a complete flip for the final 23 games, with only four at home.

UTB-TSC is 3-0 in Red River Athletic Conference play and shares the conference lead with Texas Wesleyan University. The Rams come to Brownsville for an important three-game series Friday and Saturday.

Scott Frazier leads the everyday hitters with a .414 batting average, followed by Colby Henscey at .360, and Joel Fernandez at .333.

Adam Vera, who holds a solid 1.89 ERA, leads the team in pitching record with a 3-0 mark, and innings pitched with 19. Rory Young (2-0) has posted a 0.00 ERA in two starts, and six relievers also hold perfect ERA marks. Marcos de Leon (1-1) leads in strikeouts with 26 in 18 innings pitched.

Scorpions women’s golf team off to slow start

LAREDO — The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College women’s golf team did not get off to the kind of start it was looking for at the Jack Brown Memorial Golf Tournament hosted by Texas A&M International University on Monday at the Laredo Country Club.

The Scorpions shot a team total 366 on the first day of the 36-hole tournament. The final round gets under way with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. Scores of other teams in the field were not immediately available.

Krystal Garza’s 88 led the team. Elizabeth Garza and Veronika Vasquez each had rounds of 92, Alainey Muro shot a 94 and Cat Lira shot 110.

Teams in the tournament played in cold conditions early, with temperatures in the mid 40s to start the day. There was no practice round Sunday because of the weather conditions.
