UTB-TSC Capsules: Scorpions play host to TAMUK for first time
The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College returns to the friendly confines of Scorpion Field after 11 straight road games when Texas A&M-Kingsville visits at 6 p.m. Tuesday in UTB-TSC's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
The visit by the Javelinas marks the first time in baseball that they have played UTB-TSC in Brownsville. UTB-TSC will be wearing pink shirts in observance of breast cancer awareness. Scorpion head coach Bryan Aughney, whose mother passed away to breast cancer when he was 17 years old, started the tradition in 2010.
Dr. Ruth Ann Ragland, UTB-TSC Associate Provost and breast cancer survivor, will throw out of the ceremonial first pitch before the start of the first game.
UTB-TSC plays 16 of its next 20 games in March at Scorpion Field. The Scorpions finished the month of February with a 12-4 record, playing the first five games at home and the next 11 on the road.
The Javelinas (6-6) are members of NCAA Division II, and are longtime members of the Lone Star Conference. The Javelinas are 4-5 in conference games after dropping three games to Tarleton State in Kingsville. Under third-year head coach Jason Gonzales, the Javelinas have gone 20-35 and 28-25 the last two seasons.
It's only the second meeting between the two schools in baseball. The Javelinas won the first game 5-1 in 2008 in Kingsville. UTB-TSC visits Nolan Ryan Field in Kingsville March 29 in a non-conference game to end the busiest month of the season for the Scorpions.
Following the TAMUK game, the Scorpions will play host to Bacone College (Okla.) in a Red River Athletic Conference three-game series, starting with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday.
After starting RRAC competition with three series away from home, the Scorpions play three of the next four conference series at home. UTB-TSC is 7-2 in conference games and is in third place among 11 teams.
