Scorpions visit Texas Wesleyan in crucial conference series
The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College gets a major Red River Athletic Conference test when the Scorpions visit Texas Wesleyan University for a three-game series Friday and Saturday in Fort Worth.
The two teams meet in a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m. Friday and a single game at noon Saturday at LaGrave Field.
It’s a rematch of the 2010 RRAC Tournament championship game at the same location. The Scorpions won the first championship game 8-4, giving both teams one loss in the tournament and forcing a deciding game. TWU won the second championship game 16-9.
The Rams, who lead the all-time series with the Scorpions, 11-3, have participated in five straight conference championship games.
UTB-TSC holds the best record in the Red River Athletic Conference at 8-1. After the first weekend of conference play, the Scorpions are 3-0 following a three-game sweep of Southwestern Assemblies of God University. TWU is 4-3 and 2-1 in conference games, winning two of three at University of the Southwest (N.M.)
In the three-game series against SAGU, the Scorpions stole 27 bases in three games and are ranked first nationally with 40 stolen bases and second in stolen bases per game with a 4.44 average.
Center fielder Jorge Camorlinga leads the nation with 10 stolen bases.
Mitch Schaafsma (3-0, 1.38 ERA), Kevin Chapman (2-0, 0.87 ERA) and Danny Gidora (2-0, 0.75 ERA) are the likely starters, although coach Bryan Aughney will have Julian Moya (1-1, 2.31 ERA) available.
The Scorpions have eight players hitting over .300, with Felix Fanaselle leading the way with a .444 average and leads the team in RBIs with 10. Joel Fernandez is hitting .400 and Matt Ginn is hitting .357 with three homers and nine RBIs.
Following the weekend series, the Scorpions will meet The University of Texas-Pan American on Tuesday in Edinburg.
