UTB-TSC: Scorpions win Jack Brown Memorial women's golf tournament
LAREDO - Freshman Elizabeth Garza shot a round of 83 to take medalist honors and lead the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College holds the women's division championship of the Jack Brown Memorial Golf Tournament at the Laredo Country Club.
The tournament, the first of the spring semester, was hosted by Texas A&M International. There were three full teams and three individuals participating from Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
"That's a great way to start off the year," Scorpions golf coach Anthony Lopez said. "We'll definitely try to get some momentum in towards next week for our home tournament."
Garza shot a round of 83 on Tuesday to go with her 84 on Monday for a 167 total. Teammate junior Krystal Garza was just one shot behind with a 168 after shooting 84s on both days and was finished in second place in the medalist race.
"Liz's win was awesome, and she has a lot of potential ahead of her," Lopez said. "All the good practice she has been doing has really paid off. I'm very proud of her and hopefully it's the first of many."
Andrea Cadriel shot a 93 to go with a first-round 95 for a 188 total. Eneida Alonso finished with a 202 and Pamela Lopez 203.
The Scorpion women's team will participate in its only home tournament of the season Sunday and Monday at the Sen. Eddie Lucio Invitational Tournament. The Scorpion men golfers also will be taking part in the 36-hole tournament.
