RGV Capsules: Scorpions lead after Round 1 of TAMIU Tournament
LAREDO - The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College holds the first-round lead of the Jack Brown Memorial Golf Tournament after the first day of the two-day tournament at the Laredo Country Club, hosted by Texas A&M International.
The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
Junior Krystal Garza and freshman Elizabeth Garza each shot rounds of 84 and are tied for first in the medalist chase. Other scores for the Scorpions included Andrea Cadriel at 95 and Eneida Alonso at 102. Pamela Lopez's 103 score did not count toward the team totals.
UTB-TSC's round of 365 leads a field that includes host TAMIU, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas Lutheran.
UTPA completes first spring tournament
VICTORIA - Senior Haley Hocott shot a three-over par 75 in her final round and finished tied for 34th on the individual leaderboard as the University of Texas-Pan American women’s golf team finished off the Claud Jacobs Intercollegiate golf tournament Monday at the Victoria Country Club. The Broncs women finished 15th of 17 competing schools in their first tournament of the spring schedule. The tournament was hosted by Texas State.
Hocott’s 75 on the final 18 holes today was the best score for a Broncs golfer over the two-day tournament. She shot an opening-round 79 and second-round score of 85 to finish with a total of 239 (+11) to lead UTPA.
Majo Camey was second on the UTPA scoresheet finishing with a combined score of 250 (+34). Sarah Kothny was one stroke behind Camey with a score of 251 (+35) after finishing Monday with a third-round score of 81 (+9), the second best score of the round for UTPA.
Camey finished tied for 60th and Kothny tied for 62nd in the 90-person field. Elena Arroyo (262, +46), and Melinda Uriegas (264, +48) rounded out the scorecards for the Broncs.
UTPA finished with a combined team score of 999 finishing five strokes behind McNeese State for 14th. Tournament host Texas State won the team title with a team score of 912. Rounding out the top five were Kansas (920), Tulsa (923), North Texas (923) and Sam Houston State (939).
Bobcats golfer Krista Puisite won the individual title in a playoff with Tulsa’s Kamryb Ruffin. Both finished with a total of 225 (+9) for the tournament.
The Bronsc women will have two weeks before their next tournament begins Feb. 28 in Corpus Christi as they compete in the Islander Classic hosted by Texas A&M-CC.
