Scorpions volleyball waiting for RRAC semifinal opponent

The No. 9 University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College women’s volleyball team, which has steamrolled through the Red River Athletic Conference without losing a set, faces two more hurdles when the Scorpions begin play Friday in the RRAC Tournament at the Sid Richardson Center on the campus of Texas Wesleyan.

UTB-TSC (29-1) is the top seed in the six-team tournament and has a bye during the opening quarterfinal round.

The Scorpions play at 4:30 p.m. Friday against the winner of the morning quarterfinal match between fourth-seeded Texas Wesleyan (16-16) and fifth-seeded Our Lady of the Lake (15-12).

In the other quarterfinal, second-seeded Wiley College (20-4) plays at 7 p.m. against the winner of the morning quarterfinal between third-seeded Southwestern Assemblies of God (23-8) and sixth-seeded Huston-Tillotson (6-32).

The semifinal winners meet for the tournament championship at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Live audio and live statistics of the games will be provided Friday and Saturday at www.utbathletics.com.

Men’s, women’s team play waiting game

With the Red River Athletic Conference championships in their rearview mirrors, the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College men’s and women’s soccer teams wait until Sunday to find out who and where they will play their NAIA Soccer Championship opening-round games.

While UTB-TSC finished tournament play last weekend in Fort Worth, most conferences around the country are playing their conference tournaments this week. The top 10 ranked teams are guaranteed to play host to opening-round games if they submitted bids. The next highest ranked teams submitting bids are expected to play host to games.

The UTB-TSC men finished the season ranked 15th the NAIA coaches top 25 poll, putting the Scorpions in excellent position to play host to the Nov. 21 game. The Scorpions are 17-0-1 for the season and have a 14-game winning streak.

The Scorpions’ women’s soccer team, which finished the season 11-4-2, received one vote in the last NAIA coaches top 25 poll, which was equivalent to a tie for 40th. There is a possibility the Scorpions could play host to the opening-round game as well.

The announcement will be made at 4 p.m. Sunday on the NAIA Web site.
