UTB-TSC Capsules: Scorpions from all sports gather for athletics banquet

About 100 University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Scorpions student-athletes gathered at the Student Union Gran Salon for the 2011 Scorpion Athletics Banquet, which included presentation of numerous awards to student-athletes.

Among the presentations was a special tribute to Scorpions women’s soccer player Helen Wagstaff, who received her recognition as 2011 Dr. Red River Athletic Conference Dr. LeRoy Walker Champions of Character Award.

Wagstaff is the lone recipient from the RRAC, which had more than 1,500 student-athletes in its 13-member institutions during the 2010-11 academic year.

Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Hilda Silva presented RRAC coach of the year awards to men’s soccer coach Dan Balaguero and volleyball coach Todd Lowery.

The other special award presented was to the women’s soccer team for receiving the NAIA Champions of Character team award for women’s soccer. The award was announced during the NAIA women’s soccer national tournament in December 2010 in Decatur, Ala.

A video recap of the highlights of the 2010-11, including some bonus features, was also shown.

Fulton signs RRAC letter of intent to join Scorpions

Los Fresnos goalkeeper Amanda Fulton signed a Red River Athletic Conference letter of intent to join the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College women’s soccer team Wednesday at the Recreation, Education and Kinesiology Center.

Fulton was a member of the Falcons team that won the District 32-5A championship the last two years. She has been chosen first-team all-district in 2010 and 2011.

"I know that we are getting a top class student-athlete with Amanda joining our program," Scorpions women’s soccer coach Nik Barjaktarevic said. "She has a great work ethic and personality that will have her fit in quickly into our team. Amanda will increase competition for the extremely important position of goalkeeper along with our senior return Jessica Hamer, and two more freshman. We are happy to have Amanda kicking off our recruiting class, which I believe is our best so far."

Fulton, a soon-to-be Scorpion Scholar, is expected to major in nursing.

"The programs at UTB-TSC are really expanding and touching the community," Fulton said. "I can see myself working hard with the soccer team and the competition level is very high and I like to be pushed to my limits. I look forward to the relationships I will make with the girls and making those memories that I’ll never forget."
