College Sports Capsules: Washington adds F Shawn Kemp Jr. to 2011 class
SEATTLE (AP) — Washington has added a familiar name in the Pacific Northwest to its 2011 recruiting class.
The Huskies announced Thursday that Shawn Kemp Jr. has signed a scholarship agreement, becoming the sixth player for the Huskies' 2011 class.
Kemp is the son of former Seattle SuperSonics star Shawn Kemp. The younger Kemp originally signed with Auburn in November 2009 before attending post graduate school at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va.
Kemp immediately will beef up Washington's front court. The 6-foot-9, 265-pound forward averaged 12 points and eight rebounds per game as a junior at Cherokee High School in Canton, Ga.
Kemp joins Andrew Andrews, Martin Breunig, Jernard Jarreau, Hikeem Stewart and Tony Wroten as members of the Huskies recruiting class.
Cyprien returns to SE Louisiana as assistant coach
HAMMOND, La. (AP) — Southeastern Louisiana University has added former Lions standout Micheal Cyprien to the men's basketball staff as an assistant coach.
Coach Jim Yarbrough said Wednesday that Cyprien would replace associate head coach Roman Banks, who was named head coach at Southern University last month. Yarbrough says Cyprien's hiring is subject to approval from the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors.
The 27-year-old Cyprien began his coaching career last season at Rogers State (Okla.) University where he helped the Hillcats reach a 22-12 record, a No. 25 national ranking and a berth in the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship, where they advanced to the quarterfinals.
Cyprien played in 47 games at Southeastern, helping the Lions to a pair of Southland Conference championships and a berth in the 2005 NCAA Championships.
Guard Oliver transfers to Seton Hall
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) — Swingman Brian Oliver has transferred from Georgia Tech to Seton Hall. Oliver, a 6-foot-6, 226-pound native of Glassboro, N.J., averaged 8.3 points and 2.9 rebounds in 58 games with the Yellow Jackets. He averaged 10.5 points and 4.5 rebounds last year, as Georgia Tech finished 13-18.
A 3-point specialist, he connected on 6-of-11 shots from long range and scored a game-high 32 points in a 80-76 loss to Syracuse on Nov. 27. As a freshman, Oliver appeared in every game for Georgia Tech and averaged nearly 20 minutes in ACC action. Oliver played four years at William Penn High School in New Castle, Del.
The Pirates finished 13-18, as well, last season.
Santa Clara gives Keating extension
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Santa Clara has extended the contract of basketball coach Kerry Keating through the 2014-15 season. Athletic director Dan Coonan announced the move Thursday.
Keating led the Broncos to the second-most wins in school history last season with 24. Santa Clara also won its first postseason tournament title taking the title in the CollegeInsider.com tournament. Keating, a former assistant to Ben Howland at UCLA, has a 66-68 record in four seasons with the Broncos.

Oklahoma pitcher on Team USA roster for Canadian event
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — An Oklahoma softball pitcher will join the USA Softball team at the 2011 Canadian Open Fast-Pitch International Championship in Surrey, British Columbia.
Keilani Ricketts and the team will face Team Australia Saturday afternoon in the women's international round robin before playing Team Japan Saturday night.
Ricketts helped the Women's National Team to an 11-0 victory over the Junior National Team on June 29 in one of two exhibition games between the teams. Ricketts pitched three hitless innings with four strikeouts in the victory.
She finished her sophomore season with a 29-15 record and helped lead the Sooners back to the Women's College World Series for the first time since 2004.
Ricketts holds the school record for strikeouts in a single game after getting 19 against Iona in the NCAA Regionals.
MSU-B signs former Billings West pitcher MacDonald
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — A former standout pitcher at Billings West High School has signed a letter of intent to play for the Montana State Billings softball team. MSU-Billings coach Lisa Allen said Thursday that Jessyka MacDonald would join the program beginning with the 2011-2012 season.
MacDonald just finished one of the best pitching careers in state softball history this past season. She set numerous All-Class records, including the career strikeouts record (714), most career victories (48) and most career shutouts (32). The 5-foot-8 pitcher also has thrown four career no-hitters.
Baseball
State Museum to feature Gamecocks baseball items
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina baseball fans now have a good reason to visit the state museum. Chief Curator of History Fritz Hamer said the South Carolina State Museum has updated its display of Gamecock baseball memorabilia after the team's second consecutive College World Series victory. The exhibit will be in the museum lobby through Sept. 5.
Hamer said the museum brought out items it showed off last year after South Carolina's first national baseball championship. He said museum officials have updated the display with newspaper front pages of the Gamecocks' 2011 championship.
South Carolina set records for most consecutive games won in the NCAA tournament and the College World Series. The Gamecocks clinched the title last month with a 5-2 victory over Florida.
Hometown to honor CWS standout
MAULDIN, S.C. (AP) — College World Series star Scott Wingo will be honored in his hometown of Mauldin on Sunday. The city plans a celebration for South Carolina's second baseman, who was named the most outstanding player of the Gamecocks' second straight national title run. The city says Mauldin High will retire Wingo's jersey and the mayor will present him with a key to the city. Mayor Don Godbey will also give Wingo a proclamation about his success in Omaha, Neb.
Wingo scored the winning run in South Carolina's clinching game of the 2010 College World Series. Wingo hit .333 in last month's world series with four RBIs. He also made several critical defensive plays to keep the Gamecocks alive.

Woman indicted in death of MTSU basketball player
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) — The roommate of a slain Middle Tennessee State basketball player has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in connection to the woman's death.
Joe Brandon, the attorney for 18-year-old Shanterrica Madden, tells The Associated Press that his client was indicted Thursday and is scheduled to appear in court on July 18.
Madden is accused in the killing of 21-year-old Tina Stewart, who was stabbed to death March 2 following a fight at their apartment.
Brandon has said in court that Madden acted in self-defense. Stewart's parents have also filed a $20 million wrongful death lawsuit against Madden.
Lady Griz 2011-12 basketball schedule released
MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — Montana women's basketball coach Robin Selvig says his team has another challenging schedule this winter, with nine of the first 11 games against teams that advanced to national tournaments last season.
The highlights include a Nov. 11-12 tournament at DePaul in Chicago that also includes St. Mary's and Samford. The Lady Griz Holiday Classic Dec. 29-30 includes teams from Idaho, North Dakota and Southern Mississippi.
