Scorpions still set to play St. Edwards in Austin on Sunday in men's soccer
Comments 0 | Recommend 0It's tough to keep a good team down, especially the men's soccer squad from the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
Hurricane Ike has canceled or postponed volleyball and golf action for UTB-TSC over the next few days, but as of Friday, the 2-1 Scorpions still were planning to travel to Austin for Sunday's 1 p.m. match against 3-0 St. Edwards.
The UTB-TSC men are coming off last weekend's victories over St. Thomas University of Houston (1-0) and Oklahoma Baptist University (3-2) in the inaugural Scorpion Soccer Classic.
If Mother Nature permits, the Scorpions will be going against a solid St. Edwards squad that has scored 16 goals in three matches and not allowed any.
"I was delighted with our two wins last weekend," UTB-TSC men's soccer coach Dan Balaguero said. "I was not very happy with the performances, but the attitude and spirit was great. The boys found a way to win both games. Good teams and players find a way to win when they are not playing well.
"I hope we have gained some confidence from the two wins and will continue rolling," he added. "The schedule gets very busy after next week, so we need to go into that period with confidence. It should be a good game against St. Edwards. They will be very tough."
The UTB-TSC women's soccer team is open this weekend. The volleyball team's home match scheduled today against St. Thomas was canceled.
The Scorpion men's and women's golf teams were to open the season at a Texas Lutheran University tournament in Seguin on Monday and Tuesday. That tournament has been postponed until Oct. 27-28.
