Three more soccer players sign letters of intent
Three more soccer players, two from the Rio Grande Valley and a transfer from the University of Maine, have signed NAIA letters of intent to play for the Scorpions this fall.
Iain McGregor of Scotland, who currently attends the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, San Benito High School senior Jesus Zuniga, and Andy Price from the University of Maine will suit up to play next season.
“The three players all bring different qualities to the program, and I’m thrilled they will be joining us,” Scorpion head coach Dan Balaguero said. “They are all very good students as well as being very versatile players. I know they will all be very successful, not only their playing careers here, but in their endeavors after college.”
The players will report for the start of Scorpion men’s soccer practice in early August. The Scorpions begin play Aug. 23 against Instituto Technologico Superiores de Poza Rica.
MacGregor, who carries a 3.9 grade point average, is a native of Scotland who has been attending UTB-TSC for two years. He plans to graduate in December with a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance.
“As someone who is a little older than the traditional college player, I am delighted to have been se-lected to be part of the inaugural UTB-TSC soccer team,” MacGregor said. “I hope to use my experience to assist in our quest for success. I look forward to playing alongside the quality players that have been selected from around the world and cannot wait for the season to begin.”
Price went to Temple Moore High School in Leeds, England. He was named to the America East Aca-demic Honor Roll two years and a Maine Scholar-Athlete Rising Star one year. He will be a junior at UTB-TSC and plans to major in communications.
“After two disappointing years at Maine I am looking forward to this amazing opportunity to start fresh with a great coach and a new team that has the ability to win a national championship,” Price said.
“I am looking forward to playing soccer in an environment where the community loves it as much as I do. There is no substitute for support and I think with the support of the school and the local people the pos-sibilities for this program are endless. I just can’t wait to start working with the guys.”
Zuniga was a four-year starter at San Benito and has been named to the District 32-5A All-District team.
“I think this is a wonderful opportunity for me to grow as a soccer player,” Zuniga said. “I feel like I can help the team by being a disciplined and coachable player. I know I will always give 100 percent. We are going to have a great team and hope we make UTB-TSC proud.”
