Warner's home run gives Scorpions series sweep
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Matt Warner socked a two-run home run down the left-field line in the bottom of the extra eighth inning to give the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College a dramatic 8-6 victory over The University of Houston-Victoria and a four-game series sweep Sunday night at Scorpion Field.
UTB-TSC (5-3) won the first game of the doubleheader 5-3. Coupled with 8-2 and 13-0 victories Saturday, it earned its first four-game series sweep since joining the NAIA in 2007.
The Scorpions next face the Jaguars (1-10) again in a four-game series next weekend in Victoria.
Jorge Camorlinga led the Scorpions in hitting for the series, going 9 for 16. Warner went 6 for 12 in the series, with 10 RBIs.
UTB-TSC 5, UHV 3
UTB-TSC came back from a 3-2 deficit to tie the game in the fifth and scored two runs in the sixth to break the tie.
Freshman John Bustamante pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief work to gain his first collegiate victory, striking out five. Chris Raley came on the in the seventh inning for his first save of the year.
The Scorpions outhit the Jaguars 9-5, led by Warner’s two hits and two RBIs. Peter Maldonado also had two hits for the Scorpions.
UTB-TSC 8, UHV 6, 8 innings
UTB-TSC had a 5-1 lead after two innings before UHV pecked away and took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh. The Scorpions tied the game at 6 in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.
Warner’s hit drove in Walter Blume, who walked to lead off the eighth inning. The homer was Warner’s only hit of the game, although he had three RBIs and scored three times. Camorlinga was the only Scorpions player with two hits.
Daniel Garcia started for the Scorpions, going five innings. Kevin Chapman, the fourth pitcher, blew the save opportunity in the seventh but got credit for his first win of the season.
