New Mexico State cruised to a 21-1 victory over the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College in seven innings Tuesday at Scorpion Field, marking the first visit by an NCAA Division I opponent in Brownsville.

The Aggies (21-3) and Scorpions (17-20) meet again in the finale of the two-game series at 6 p.m. today at Scorpion Field.

Collegiate Baseball Newspaper lists the Aggies as the 24th best team in the country. They showed the Scorpions why after three innings Tuesday, scoring five runs in the fourth, eight in the fifth and five in the seventh inning.

The Scorpions had held the Aggies to three runs and three hits before the floodgates opened.

New Mexico State, which leads the NCAA with 58 homers in 23 games, hit three more Tuesday. Chuck Howard and Wade Reynoso hit three-run blasts in the fifth, and Jeffrey Farnham added a grand slam in the seventh.

The Scorpions managed five hits, including two by Gilberto Puente. The lone run came in the fourth inning when Ryan Macdonald doubled and came home on Puente's second single.

UTB-TSC coach Bryan Aughney used four pitchers: Jesus Mendoza, Sam Buchanan, Diego Garcia and Daniel Garcia.
