UTB-TSC makes trek to College of Ozarks Thursday
POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College Scorpions will face College of the Ozarks in southwestern Missouri for a five-game series starting Thursday.
The 16-hour road trip is the longest bus ride for a Scorpions team since starting play in the NAIA in 2006. Point Lookout is located just outside Branson, Mo., a popular tourist attraction dubbed the "live music capital of the world."
UTB-TSC (5-13) will face CO (3-8) starting with a game at 5 p.m. Thursday. Jesus Mendoza (0-1) is the scheduled starter for the Scorpions.
The two teams meet again for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. Friday, with Julian Moya (3-2) going in the opener and Danny Gidora (0-4) in the nightcap. On Saturday, the teams meet in another doubleheader at 1 p.m. with Zack Moya (1-2) and Tony Lerma (1-2) scheduled to start for the Scorpions.
Coach Bryan Aughney is hoping for positive things from the Scorpions on this road trip, especially after defeating 14th-ranked Texas Wesleyan on Sunday.
Five Scorpions are hitting above the .300 mark, led by junior Ryan Macdonald (.364). Sophomore Jorge Camorlinga is hitting .360, senior transfer Jose Guerra is hitting .353, freshman Peter Maldonado is hitting .333, and sophomore transfer Matt Warner is hitting .308.
Julian Moya is averaging 16.13 strikeouts per nine innings, a mark that has him ranked sixth in the nation in that category.
