Scorpions women win Dustdevil Open
LAREDO - The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College women's golf team finished first in the three-team field at the Dustdevil Spring Invitational on Tuesday at Laredo Country Club.
The Scorpions' 36-hole total of 709 was seven shots ahead of Incarnate Word.
UTB-TSC senior April Martinez won medalist honors, shooting an 81 after an opening-round 78 for a 159 total. She finished 11 shots ahead of her closest competitor.
Other scorers for the Scorpions included Allison Valles (178), Andrea Cadriel (180) and Krystal Garza (192). Pamela Lopez' 232 did not count toward the team score.
UTB-TSC next competes in the Schreiner Invitational on Feb. 16 and 17 in Kerrville
Meanwhile, the Scorpions men's golf team finished in third
The Scorpions had the lowest team score Tuesday with a 301, but finished 24 shots behind tournament winner Abilene Christian. The Scorpions' B team finished fifth with a 967.
Adam Haley had an even-par 72 to lead the Scorpions. After shooting rounds of 79 and 73 Monday, his 224 total was good for sixth place. Vince Cavazos shot a 79 to go with Monday's 72 and 74 to finish with a 225 and in a tie for seventh place.
Other scorers for the Scorpions included Chris Milligan (235) and Brock Crosson (239). Victor Calzada's 241 did not count.
For the Scorpions' B team, Jerry Borgogni was low score with a 237, followed by Matt Mah and Anthony Milligan at 244. David Pena was at 247, and Joseph Lucio's 253 did not count.
The next competition for the men is March 2-3 at the Northwood Invitational in DeSoto.
