UTB-TSC News: Scorpions split doubleheader with UH-Victoria

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College and The University of Houston-Victoria split a doubleheader Friday at Scorpion Field to start a four-game series.

UTB-TSC won the opener 9-0 but dropped the nightcap, 7-4. The Scorpions are 4-2 for the year, and the Jaguars are 1-1.

The two teams will meet in another doubleheader at noon Saturday at Scorpion Field. Saturday's games were originally scheduled for 1 p.m. but were moved up one hour because of expected rain late Saturday afternoon.

Game 1: Scorpions 9, Jaguars 0

Cory Young pitched five innings of three-hit shutout baseball and improved his record to 2-0.

Young, who has not given up a run in 11 2/3 innings, struck out eight, walked three, and scattered three hits. He threw 97 pitches in the five innings. Kale Wierenga pitched a scoreless and hitless sixth inning, and Salvador Villalpando closed out the game with a scoreless seventh, allowing one hit.

Colby Henscey went 2 for 3, including a two-run home run that cleared the 50-foot-high net in left field. Joel Fernandez also had a solo homer for the first Scorpions run in the second inning. Henscey, Zach Cordia, K.J. Semien and Fernandez each had two hits. Matt Ginn had two RBIs on a two-run single.

The Scorpions scored one run in the second, three in the third, four in the fourth and once in the fifth.

Game 2: Jaguars 7, Scorpions 4

UTB-TSC was cruising along with a 4-2 lead, but the Jaguars scored five runs in the sixth and seventh innings for a come-from-behind win.

Marcos de Leon pitched five innings of one-hit baseball but gave way to the bullpen, which lost his lead.

The Scorpions out-hit the Jaguars, 11-8, with Fernandez and Kyle Douglass each getting two hits. Douglass had three RBIs.

After UHV scored two runs in the top of the first, the Scorpions matched it with two of their own. UTB-TSC took a 3-2 lead in the second inning and extended the lead to 4-2 in the fourth. UHV scored three runs in the sixth and twice in the seventh.

The Scorpions had numerous scoring opportunities, but could not cash in. UTB-TSC left 14 runners on base.
