UTB-TSC: Scorpions sweep doubleheader from Jarvis Christian

HAWKINS — The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College offense struck for 26 runs and pitcher Danny Gidora threw another shutout as the Scorpions routed Jarvis Christian College 12-0 here Friday in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Scorpions hung on for a 14-12 win in the second game.

The Scorpions (17-5, 12-2 RRAC) and Bulldogs (5-13, 5-9) play the third game of the series at noon Saturday.

UTB-TSC is home for eight games within six days starting Monday.

Game 1: UTB-TSC 12, JCC 0, 6 innings

Gidora (6-0) lowered his earned run average to 0.49 with a one-hit gem, his sharpest outing of the season. The lone hit by JCC was a single to center by Jonathan Cartegena in the fifth inning, and that was the only baserunner for the Bulldogs. Gidora struck out nine in only six innings and did not walk a batter.

In six starts this year, Gidora has thrown three complete game shutouts and shared in another with the bullpen. He has allowed one earned in two games.

Meanwhile, the Scorpions bats woke up with a 13-hit attack. Joel Fernandez and Felix Fanaselle each had three hits, while Jorge Camorlinga and Matt Warner had two hits each. Warner added a two-run homer.

UTB-TSC scored three in the first, four in the second, one in the fifth and four in the sixth. The game was scheduled for seven innings but called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

Game 2: UTB-TSC 14, JCC 12

UTB-TSC was down 3-1 early but fought back to take the lead. The Scorpions had a seven-run advantage going into the bottom of the eighth inning at 14-7, but the Bulldogs scored one run in the eighth and four times in the inning to make the game close.

The Scorpions had their biggest offensive output of the season with 18 hits.

Warner and Peter Maldonado each went 4 for 5. Warner drove in five runs including a solo home run, his second of the season. Jeff Allen had three hits and Fanaselle two, including a solo homer. Fanaselle scored four runs.

Zach Armstrong (1-0) recorded his first victory, going six innings. He allowed nine hits and five earned runs. Baylr Bickerton allowed three earned runs in two innings, and Luis Sanchez allowed three earned runs in the ninth. JCC had 17 hits, most by a Scorpions opponent this season.
