UTB-TSC Capsules: Scorpions hope to continue streak in doubleheader

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College baseball team resumes action with a doubleheader against Valley City State (N.D.) at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Scorpion Field, hoping to extend a four-game winning streak.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Scorpions won three games against Fisher College and one against VCSU to raise their record to 12-15 for the season.

On Sunday, the Scorpions won two games in contrasting dramatic fashion. UTB-TSC scored 11 runs in the fifth inning - their biggest outburst of the season - to record a 19-9 win over Fisher College (Mass.). Gus Henggeler blasted a three-run walk-off home run, the first in his life. The 19 runs scored also was a season high.

Ironically, the Scorpions' NAIA single-game scoring record is 20 runs, also against Fisher College, in 2008.

The second game had more drama, this time against VCSU. UTB-TSC had a 3-1 lead going into the seventh inning disintegrate and become a 5-3 deficit. The Scorpions tied the game in the seventh at 5 and loaded the bases for Henggeler. This time, Henggeler executed a suicide squeeze bunt to perfection as the Scorpions won 6-5.

Including two games between FC and VCSU Monday, seven games have been played at Scorpion Field since Saturday. The string continues Wednesday when the Scorpions meet FC again at 6 p.m. Wednesday. UTB-TSC then has two games scheduled Thursday against different opponents.

In the first four games of the Spring Break series, the Scorpions have hit five homers. Juan Munoz, Matt Ginn and Brian Bustos have joined Henggeler in the home run parade.

Outfielder Jorge Camorlinga, who has the team's longest hitting streak of the season at nine games, now leads the Scorpions in hitting with a .354 average
