The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College men's soccer team avenged its only home loss of last season on Saturday evening in the Scorpion Soccer Classic against St. Thomas University at Morningside Park.

The Scorpions, playing their home opener, defeated St. Thomas 1-0 on a soggy field after losing to the Celts 3-2 last year at Morningside Park.

Saturday's only tally came in the 30th minute when Fernando Mendoza's shot found the net thanks to an assist by James McCarron.

The Scorpions, now 2-1 on the season, held on the rest of the way despite constant pressure from the Celts. UTB-TSC played a man short the final six and a half minutes after Enrique "Chicle" Rivera was red-carded.

In the other Scorpion Classic men's match earlier Saturday, Oklahoma Baptist University beat College of Santa Fe (N.M.) 6-1. Today's tournament games at Morningside will have St. Thomas playing Santa Fe at 1 p.m. and UTB-TSC facing OBU at 3 p.m.

Also Saturday, the UTB-TSC women tied OBU 1-1 in overtime. Kirsten Morrow gave OBU a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. The Scorpions' Biana de Leon evened it with a goal from close range with 21 minutes left in regulation.

OT consisted of two 10-minute halves.
