UTB-TSC: Scorpions return to field after delay
After a schedule interruption caused by freezing temperatures, the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College returns to Scorpion Field for two doubleheaders against The University of Houston-Victoria on Saturday and Sunday.
The Scorpions and Jaguars will meet for two games each day, starting at 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Saturday’s doubleheader was originally scheduled for 1 p.m.
The four-game series originally was scheduled to be played Friday and Saturday, but moved back one day because of freezing weather in South Texas.
UTB-TSC (1-0) opened the season with a 5-2 win over Texas A&M International on Feb. 1. UHV (2-4) won one of four games against Northwood last week and split a doubleheader against Texas A&M -Kingsville.
Since the Scorpions joined the NAIA in baseball in 2007, UTB-TSC and UHV have met 22 times, all since 2008 when UHV joined the NAIA. The Scorpions have played the Jaguars more than any other NAIA opponent and have won eight of the first 22 games.
In 2010, UTB-TSC swept a four-game series at home and won one of three games in Victoria.
UHV, coached by former Houston Astros infielder Terry Puhl, is an independent institution in the NAIA.
The Scorpions, members of the Red River Athletic Conference in the NAIA, came from behind in the late innings Tuesday against TAMIU. The Dustdevils led early, 2-0, and held the Scorpions without a hit for five innings. UTB-TSC scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead, and Peter Maldonado delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning for the 5-2 win.
UTB-TSC coach Bryan Aughney used five pitchers against TAMIU, and the group combined for 10 strikeouts and four walks.
After the weekend series, the Scorpions start a string of 11 straight games on the road for the rest of February. UTB-TSC plays at Southwestern Assemblies of God on Feb. 11 and 12 in the first of 30 conference games.
