Scorpions rally for win and split of doubleheader with Steers
George Rose blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lead Texas College to a 2-1 win over the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College during the first game of a doubleheader on a very windy Friday at Scorpion Field.
UTB-TSC (29-15, 16-7 RRAC) and TC (19-22, 11-12) play the final game of the three-game series at noon Saturday.
Game 1: Texas College 2, UTB-TSC 1: Down by one run, Texas College's George Rose surprised Scorpions starter Danny Gidora by taking a fastball into the high net over left-center field. Robert Gordon had singled prior to the homer.
Gidora (8-2) allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked one. He threw 89 pitches. His earned run average, which was 1.22 before the game, is now 1.36.
The Scorpions scored their lone run in the first inning on a double by Jorge Camorlinga and run-scoring single by Matt Warner. The score stood at 1-0 until the two-run homer in the fifth.
UTB-TSC had only four hits, two by Warner.
Game 2: UTB-TSC 6, Texas College 4: UTB-TSC struck for four runs in the fifth inning to erase a 4-2 deficit and held the lead the rest of the way. The Steers led 4-0 at one point before the Scorpions cut the deficit in half in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth.
Julian Moya (4-4) pitched the first seven innings, striking out eight and walking three. Zach Armstrong went the final two innings and earned his second save of the season.
The Scorpions had seven hits, and got big two-run hits by Gilberto Puente and Peter Maldonado in the fifth.
Camorlinga and Puente each had two hits for the Scorpions.
