UTB-TSC Capsules: Scorpions golf places sixth at Tangle Ridge

Heavy rains played havoc with teams and scores at the Tangle Ridge Shootout, and the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College finished sixth in the tournament that concluded Tuesday.

The tournament began Monday, but not all teams got to finish play because of heavy rain in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Everyone completed their first rounds Tuesday and completed the scheduled 18 holes in the second round as well.

The Scorpions came back and played strong in the second round with a 297 score after a 312 in the first round for a 609 total. The finish was good for a strong sixth place finish in the nine-team field, but only 16 shots behind the tournament winner.

Oklahoma Baptist won a tiebreaker with Texas Wesleyan JV after both shot 593 scores. Seven of the nine teams shot 610 or better.

Brock Crosson led UTB-TSC with a 148 total, which earned him a tie for fifth-place. After an opening-round 79 in the rain, he shot 69 in the second round, tied for the best round of the tournament.

Chris Milligan shot 154 (80-74), Vince Cavazos 155 (76-79), and Joseph Lucio and Markus Cavazos each shot 156s. Victor Calzada, playing as an individual, shot a 163.

The tournament marked the end of the fall season for the Scorpions.

Rankings

Scorpions climb to 15th in men's soccer

UTB-TSC moved up two spots to the No. 15 position in the newest NAIA coaches top 25 in men’s soccer, and the Scorpion volleyball team remained in the No. 9 position nationally.

The Scorpions’ men’s soccer team had been ranked No. 17 for two straight weeks before moving up in the new poll. UTB-TSC received 354 points, 37 more than they had last week. The Scorpions leaped over Auburn University-Montgomery (Ala.), which dropped to No. 17, and Baker University (Kan.), which stayed at No. 16.

UTB-TSC is 13-0-1 for the year and 7-0 in Red River Athletic Conference Play. The Scorpions finish conference play at home at 1 p.m. Saturday against Northwood in a game that could decide the Red River Athletic Conference regular-season champion. Their last game of the regular season is at home Monday, Nov. 2, against Texas A&M International.

The Scorpions’ women’s volleyball team stayed at the No. 9 position for the third straight week. UTB-TSC lost four points from last week but is still 16 points ahead of No. 10 Vanguard University (Calif.)

UTB-TSC is 26-1 for the season and 13-0 in RRAC competition. The Scorpions close out their home season at 7 p.m. Friday against Bacone and then finish the season on the road Nov. 6 and 7.

Honors

Five UTB-TSC players honored by RRAC

For the third time this season, five Scorpions have been named Red River Athletic Conference Players of the Week.

Aaron Guerrero in men’s soccer, Helen Wagstaff and Chelsea Maidment in women’s soccer, and Arlene Ferreira and Daianarah Bracero in women’s volleyball all received the weekly honor. The Scorpions received all but two of the weekly conference awards.

Guerrero, a freshman forward from Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico, received the RRAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award. He piled up two goals and two assists as the Scorpions (13-0-1) won a pair of RRAC matches last week. He provided the difference in a showdown between unbeatens with a goal and an assist en route to a 3-0 win over Huston-Tillotson.

Guerrero added another goal and an assist in a 5-2 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God to extend UTB-TSC’s conference mark to 7-0.

Wagstaff, a midfielder from Heckmondwike, England, was the recipient of the RRAC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week recognition. She controlled the midfield in both wins and got opportunities to score against HTU. The two goals against HTU were her first of the season. She leads the team with seven assists.

Maidment, a defender from Aurora, Ontario, Canada, led a Scorpions’ defense that was superb again. In two games during the week, the Scorpions allowed only five shots, two on goal. HTU had three shots, two on goal, and SAGU had two shots, none on goal. In seven conference games, the Scorpions have allowed only three goals.

Ferreira, a sophomore outside hitter from Uberlandia, Brazil, received her fifth RRAC Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week award of the season and third consecutive. She also received the RRAC Hitter of the Week award with 27 kills and 25 digs as No. 9 UTB-TSC (26-1, 13-0) won two more conference matches.

She recorded 11 kills in a victory over Huston-Tillotson. She compiled 16 kills and 15 digs to sink Our Lady of the Lake 3-0. Ferreira posted a hitting percentage of .500 while averaging 4.5 kills per game.

Bracero, a senior setter from Sabana Grande, P.R., received the RRAC Setter of the Week honor. She combined with Ferreira on many of her 60 assists this week. Another multiple award winner from UTB-TSC, Bracero averaged 10.0 per game including 35 assists against OLLU. She also contributed six kills and two digs.
