Is landfill needed near Laguna Madre?
Editor:
After the article appeared in the newspaper concerning the contract awarded to an Oklahoma-based waste management company, we began to wonder if the rumors weve heard are true. Is this company trying to build a dump between Los Fresnos and the bay that will ultimately affect the waters of the Lower Laguna Madre?
Why, when we already have waste management landfills in place, do we need another threat to the fragile ecosystem and environment that is the basis for our economy in this area?
As fishing guides for the past 25 years, we believe it is our duty to give back something in return for the way of life we have chosen. We are the stewards of the land, water and air that comprise our environment. If we continue to progress without careful planning, the results will be disastrous for the habitat, while enriching a selected few.
We need studies to show the uninformed public the results of the backroom deals that will directly affect our health and property. If you care about the bay, ask questions regarding this proposal. That is, if you can get anyone to admit to it. Its always easier to announce the plan after it is too late to do anything about it.
