Historic Brownsville Open: Logjammed: Cano, Dergal tied for Open lead with 10 more golfers within two shots
With one round of golf in the books, there is a tie atop the leaderboard.
San Antonio native Christi Cano and Mexico’s Tanya Dergal both shot a 4-under 67 to fronted the first round of the Historic Brownsville Open on Friday at Rancho Viejo Golf & Country Club.
Briana Vega, Mo Martin and Pomanong Phatlum are all tied for third with 3-under 68s. Seven players, including Gerina Mendoza, who is second the Duramed FUTURES Tour money list, finished with a two-under 69.
"I’ve been confident the last couple of weeks, I’ve played tournament rounds (which) have been pretty good," Cano said. "My putting has been really, really good the past few weeks, so I just tried to carry that over."
"I just hit the ball very, very well," Dergal added. "I had really good birdie opportunities, so that helped."
Cano, being from Texas, is familiar with the bumpy, uneven greens that are commonplace on the El Diablo Course, which gave her an advantage over the other players.
Cano sunk five birdies on the day, including a 20-foot putt on 14 to make up for an early bogey. She followed with birdies on 15, 18 and then on the front-nine on holes five and eight.
In all, she hit nine greens in regulation and came away with birdies on five of them.
"You’re not going to putt as well as you would on other greens, especially if you’re not used to them," Cano said. "It can get really frustrating, because I’ve putted both ways on these greens before. You just have to be patient."
Meanwhile, Dergal opened up with birdies on 10 and 12, but quickly followed with two bogeys before finishing off her first nine with a birdie on 18. On the front none, she sunk birdies on Hole Nos. 5, 6 and 7 to jump into a tie for first place.
"I was just hitting well and stayed focused on having a good stroke," Dergal said of her three birdies in a row. "If I stay patient, putts are going to drop. It was one of those days where I hit the ball extremely well."
Perhaps the scorecard of the day belonged to Vega, who finished even on the front nine but had just two pars. She bogeyed four holes, birdied two and threw in an eagle on the 8th hole for good measure.
She birdied 10, 12 and 15 on the back nine to climb into a tie for third.
Martin also added eagled a hole, sinking a 77-yard shot home at the par-5 14th hole. Malinda Johnson, who was in her pairing, shouted, "Get in," as the ball was creeping toward the hole.
"I just crafted it in there a little bit," Martin said. "It’s kind of a feisty hole."
Action picks up again at 8 a.m. today. Vega, Dergal and Cano will tee off at 2:30 p.m. on the first tee to wrap up afternoon action.
"(I’ll) just try and do the same thing that I did (Friday)," Cano said. "Just try to enjoy it."
