UTPA women win minority championship

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The University of Texas-Pan American women’s golf team shot a final-round 304 to hold off Hampton (Va.) by two strokes to win the 2011 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship on Sunday at the PGA Golf Club.

The UTPA men finished the tournament in second place behind Bethune-Cookman after shooting a final-round 298.

The Broncs women, who finished with a team total of 921, were once led by the strong play of Haley Hocott. The senior, for the second straight day, fired a three-over-par 75 and finished with a three-day 227 and tied for second for the women’s individual title.

Elena Arroyo also carded 75 on Sunday and finished second on the Broncs leaderboard with a three-day 230. Majo Camey and Samantha Garcia each tallied a final round 77. Camey’s total was 232, while Garcia finished at 237. Melinda Uriegas finished the tournament with a 233 total after shooting a 78 on Sunday.

"My girls played so well and this championship was in the balance all weekend," said Ofelia Lopez, the Texas-Pan American women's coach. "I told my girls not to try and be heroes and they played as a team all week. For them to all break 80 the last two rounds, speaks volumes about our team."

The women’s championship was the second in three years and fifth all-time for the UTPA women’s golf program.

On the men’s side, the Broncs entered the final round trailing by six strokes and shot 298, their best total of the tournament, but fell short finishing as the runner-up to Bethune Cookman. BCU shot a final round 292 and finished with a three-day 887, 12 strokes ahead of UTPA. The Broncs were the defending champions.

Santiago Bueno has the best score among the men’s scorecards Sunday with a two-under par 70. Bueno finished with a 219 for the tournament. Kevin Kirakossian led all Broncs scorecards with a three-day total of 218. Kirakossian shot a one-over-par 73 on Sunday.
